Creativity, originality and excellence...

These defining qualities of The Blue Room Theatre, Perth's resource organization for performing artists, continue to flourish, with several of the organization's members among the winners of this week's Equity Benevolent Guild Awards for theatre productions in Perth during the 08/09 fiscal year.

Long time Blue Room Theatre member Ingle Knight gave arguably the best speech of the evening, accepting the Best New Play award for his work Taking Liberty. Former Blue Room Theatre staffer now PTC Artistic Director Mel Cantwell accepted the Best Production award for Knight's play, which PTC commissioned and presented.

Also an alumni of The Blue Room Theatre's extensive membership of performing artists, Luke Hewitt took out the Best Male Actor category; and original Blue Room Theatre member Sophia Hall - currently in Toronto - won Best Supporting Female Actor.

The winner of Best Design was also an absentee - Blue Room member Bryan Woltjen, currently working in Melbourne, capping off a night that saw no less than 13 Blue Room members nominated from 6 Blue Room productions, equaling the presence of Perth's major theatre companies.

While membership of The Blue Room Theatre continues to grow, and members continue to take their work around Australia and the world, The Blue Room would like to congratulate all West Australian theatre makers for their contribution to our vibrant performing arts scene.

Congratulations also to members of The Blue Room Theatre family who hosted (Ben Russell) and organized (Don Smith, Rhoda Lopez, and Caitlin Beresford-Ord, also an award nominee) the one night on the Perth performing arts calendar that our professional theatre makers are able to spend all together.

The Blue Room Theatre will present its own awards in April 2010, for productions staged at The Blue Room during the 2009 calendar year. Stay tuned...
