FAQs
Finding out about auditions | Volunteer with The Blue Room
1. How do I find out about auditions for shows at The Blue Room and Rechabites' Hall?
The first thing you need to know is that The Blue Room is not a theatre company or a casting agency which means that we don’t actually cast shows (in some instances we may assist a director in finding an actor if they are having trouble).
Productions are cast by directors and producers. They all use different strategies - below is a list of some methods used for choosing a cast:
- Placing a notice up on The Blue Room Notice Board
- ITA Website and Newsletter - Otherwise known as The Independent Theatre Association, they have an excellent website with a bulletin board, chat page and newsletter that lets you know about what auditions are going on in the independent theatre scene. Their web address is www.theatre.asn.au and their telephone number is (08) 9420 7242.
- Blue Room Members Email list - As a member you will receive regular e-bulletins filled with current information. If a director sends out an audition notice we forward info onto our members. So sign up to our e-news service (it's free!).
- Casting Agencies - Many directors cast through agencies. If you have an agent let them know that you are interested in being cast in Blue Room productions.
- Word of Mouth - Quite often it’s not about what you know but who you know. Directors like to work with performers they know and trust – so get to know people! How, you might ask? Well, come to see our shows at The Blue Room. Stick around afterwards and enjoy a drink at The Blue Room bar. If you like a particular show, let the director know. Talk to the cast. Be part of the community and most importantly become a Blue Room Member.
2. Can I volunteer at The Blue Room?
Yes, volunteers are always welcomed! You just need to indicate which areas you're interested in getting involved in and we'll try our best to accommodate you. Volunteers can help out in administration or technical departments.
We also accept interns based on objectives/outcomes of the internship, areas of study, as well as period and duration of the internship. We only accept Year 12 and above for work experience.
To register your interest in volunteering or internship at The Blue Room, please send a cover letter stating your availability, area(s) of interest and a current resume to info@blueroom.org.au.
How much time is required of me?
It depends on your interest, experience and availability. Generally, our timings are pretty flexible and we try our best to accommodate to your timings or to find a compromise.
I don’t know anything about theatre. Will I get training?
The only things that we look out for are passion, good working attitude, an ability to take instructions, initiative, responsibility, an open mind towards doing menial tasks and learning and a willingness to ask questions.
We will also take into account your past experiences in other areas such as school projects, past volunteer experiences with other companies, working experience etc.
Required skills will be imparted through on-the-job, hands-on training. We believe that volunteers gain more by learning through experiencing and through interaction with our staff and members.
